It is often annoying to download a new application simply to open an unknown file someone sent you. It is more annoying when the application you download requires you to purchase it inorder to use. In other cases the application you have to download will be enormous in size. Think of the situation where you downloaded a file of a few Kb in size and in order to open it you have download an application which has a file size in the MB range.
